Re: Shorting an index. Shorting a basket of stocks rather than just one is still dangerous, as the losses can be infinite. A good short position is obviously enhanced when the whole market is weak. The position also becomes progressively more risky when market momentum turns positive, as it has been doing lately, based on better economic outlook, less inventory glut, etc. Predicting (or encouraging?) an entire group to weaken by singling out one stock that may or may not be vulnerable is self serving.
