So what's new? I knew skaters since the 1960's and figure skating judging was unfathomable then and its unfathomable now. It was always the skater's history that got judged not their figures on day X. Any judge looked at 5 years of a skater before they started giving them marks. Come from nowhere and you could land seven spin axles off an inside edge from standing still and the judges would shrug and you would end up fourth. Fixed? Boxing is fair and professional wrestling is real by comparison. Somebody got robbed for a fine skate? Stop the presses, when did this start happening?

Let me tell you, from canoeing to sking to track and field nobody competes or races off to get on the Canadian team. Not that they are not good enough. Not that there aren't time trials and the like, phony as they are. But people are picked to get funding, coaching, spots on teams and the like from the time they are 12 years old. And if some regional coach does not like them, they might as well watch the sport on TV as compete.

Our national teams are fixed. They are not amateur. They do not race off against farm teams of competitors. In Olympic sports there is no national race selection program. You cannot get in unless the cognoscenti select you. I was in sking, skating, and canoeing and know scads of people all the way up to medal status in these sports and who deserved to get there who never did. We put win at all costs, drugs (Lloyd Percival pharmaceutical team) and phony national glory above the competitor and the sport. We do not deserve to win.

In Hungary in 1971 there were 50,000 rated ranked junior canoeists in C1 and C2 canoeing. Now that is a farm team. The best of that group is good, in world terms. In Canada there would be perhaps 125 people in that same category. We are just not in the same league as other nations in sport. Our heads and bodies. are not there. It looks bad for us to come out every four years like some rare hothouse plant and complain bitterly about our boys not being on the podium. This kind of devotion to sport does nothing to nurture true sports participation.

Kwicher bitchin. Figger Skatin' has been fixed since Tutankhamen. Yeh ain't gonna change it.
