Recent news: New Lithium-Ion technology to increase battery life

posted 11:58am EST Tue Feb 12 2002 - submitted by Roman

NEWS
Valence Technology Inc., an Austin, Texas-based developer of
lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, has announced the launch of a new
line of extended life batteries. The technology, known as Saphion,
uses a more stable phosphate cathode material in place of the less
stable and more expensive cobalt. Valence has stated that
Saphion-based batteries would provide approximately two hours
more life on notebooks than current equally sized lithium-ion batteries,
and that they should cost 30 or 40 percent less.

In conjunction with the announcement of Saphion, Valence introduced
its first new product based on the technology. The N-Charge Power
System is designed to simultaneously recharge or run up to two mobile
devices. It will allow a notebook computer to run continuously for up
to 10 hours, or provide a cellphone with 5 days' worth of non-stop
talk time. The N-Charge is expected to be released this spring.

For more, read the ZDNet article or the Valence press releases on
Saphion and the N-Charge Power System.
