NextWave Activates Wireless Network in 60 Markets

Wireless Data Service Being Offered In Selected Market Trials

WASHINGTON, Feb. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- NextWave Telecom Inc. today announced
that it has activated its wireless network in 60 markets and is engaged in
customer trials of its wireless data service in selected areas. Over the next
few months, the Company expects to complete Phase I construction and activate
its wireless network in the remaining 35 markets where it holds PCS licenses.
"This is a significant step forward in the life of NextWave," said Allen
Salmasi, NextWave's CEO and Chairman of the Board. "Deployment of an advanced
IP-based wireless network has always been one of our primary goals, and
deploying facilities and providing fully mobile wireless service to test
customers represents an important milestone for the Company and its
investors."
The NextWave network, which has been deployed to utilize advanced CDMA
packet technology, is interconnected to the public data network and will
provide users with Internet access on a fully mobile basis. As part of its
rollout, NextWave is now offering service to a community of beta-test
customers equipped with palm-sized computers that can communicate utilizing
the company's wireless network.
Pursuant to an agreement between the Company and Lucent Technologies,
engineers from both companies have been working together to design and deploy
operational wireless facilities in 93 of the company's PCS markets, and to
deploy a full-scale, third generation 1X-RTT CDMA wireless network in Detroit,
Michigan, and Madison, Wisconsin. Following a beta testing period of the
network and associated wireless devices, NextWave expects to begin offering
full commercial service in selected markets later this year.
"Deploying a wireless network covering a large portion of the country is a
tremendous accomplishment for any company, but particularly for one in the
process of completing its Chapter 11 reorganization," said Salmasi. Special
credit should be given to the NextWave engineering team, and to our partners
at Lucent for completing the initial network deployment ahead of schedule and
under budget."
NextWave is presently engaged in reorganizing its business affairs in a
Chapter 11 proceeding pending before a U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern
District of New York. "NextWave has funding in hand to complete our Phase I
deployment," said Frank Cassou, NextWave Executive Vice President and General
Counsel. "Completion of our reorganization necessarily awaits resolution of
pending litigation, but we hope for a rapid resolution of that litigation and
anticipate emerging from bankruptcy as quickly as possible. This will clear
the way for us to rapidly expand our initial systems and continue the
commercialization of our markets."
