Let me tell you, from canoeing to sking to track and field nobody competes or races off to get on the Canadian team. Not that they are not good enough. Not that there aren't time trials and the like, phony as they are. But people are picked to get funding, coaching, spots on teams and the like from the time they are 12 years old. And if some regional coach does not like them, they might as well watch the sport on TV as compete.

You sound a little bitter from your experience. There are a plethora of athletes who would disagree with your above statement.

I've watched a close friend rise to become an olympic athlete. She raced everyday to get her spot on the olympic team. She started at the University of Calgary with virtually no track experience. She approached Les Gramantik at the University of Calgary for a spot on the track team. He laughed and told her she could tag along and train. She started from no where to become the U of C's track athlete of the year. I personally watched her race in Victoria last year at the Canadian Championships. She needed a top three finish to make the olympic team. To compete in the World championships, the Pan Am games, and the Olympics, she needed qualifying times. No amount of coaching contacts or lobbying can qualify a track athlete for the olympics.
