ON sports and who is in it. It is tough for poor kids to make it. I have a developed a different slant on sports over the last few years to one of non-competitiveness and stressing fun. I am still not sure if I will put my son in hockey as it seems to rough. Funny for me to say that as in three years of junior A hockey I had 2 goals and 400 penalty minutes. Anyway Here is a heartwarming story: My son is only 6 but he has a 9 year old kid that plays here a lot - perhaps because he lives in a small semi with 3 sisters and parenst who pay the billls and put food on the table but really dont have much left after that. Well there is a skating outing for the kids next week and he doesnt own any skates. I mentioned this to my Father - well we bought the kid some skates today. I made up a lie that I got them free from the sales rep so I would not embarrass the family. Ya see my father who only in the last few years ever had any money often paid for 3-5 kids other than his own to join hockey for many years even when he didnt have any extra himself. The reason was he never was given the chance because of a unbeleivable childhood. (it gets better). He was raised by his Father who as best as I can figure was a hairs breath from the 1932 or 1936 olympics for speedskating for Canada. I have many trophies here of races he won. His Father was in ill health after the war and had no money to play sports. After WWII he never skated again having left an arm and a leg on the battlefield. no lets make it even more tragic - He was on the way home and fell underneath the train he was on. Thats the legend anyway.
