Absolutely.. Women's rights in terms of rights to own properties, inheritance etc. were spelled out during Prophet Mohammad's life.. Apparently this was even before such rights were available to women in Europe.. People also forget that Mohammad before he became prophet was actually working for a rich and prosperous woman who was a merchant..

What you see mentioned now and again in terms of restrictions in Saudi Arabia for example is all cultural as far as it goes.. What Taliban did to women in Afghanistan is unconscionable.. Nothing to do with Islam.. Bunch of misguided thugs who as you probably noticed were all men..

But then you also have places like Pakistan where a woman, Benazir Bhutto, educated at Oxford, have been elected as Prime Minister twice in last 15 years.. There are women professionals in all works of life in Pakistan.. A lot of people get a simplistic views of place like that but for example, Fundamentalist Islamic Parties have never been able to garner more then 5% of votes in last two elections in Pakistan..
