| I caught the last 45 minutes of the Vagina Monologues, as presented on HBO. Oddly enough, the first thing I saw was the less- offensive version of the snooky snorcher, older woman seducing a teenager, monologue. It was somewhat distasteful, but counter- balanced by some genuine talent, both narrative and poetic, and some acting ability as well. Additionally, it is hard not to empathize with sheer adolescent excitement. The quality of the others varied. The basic device, having the vagina be the focus, works better than expected, but was still somewhat strained. The part that I saw had just about the only heterosexual element involve rape, and idealized a lesbian dominatrix, although there was a nice, if somewhat overly graphic, piece on childbirth. Again, there was something distasteful about the PC orientation of the program, and yet the funniest piece ended up being the one about the dominatrix, especially demonstrating the varieties of moans. I would say that it was redeemed as a work of art by the empathy and talent invested in it, but I am not sure that I would have appreciated sitting through the whole show........ |
