I saw McConnell on tv last night. His objections were ridiculous. He thought that money approved by the bill to help with voter education and registration should also be banned. It seems to me that money is very important, especially after the problems that occurred in Florida with the Presidential election. - Mephisto
" SPONSORED BY Reps. Chris Shays, R-Conn., and Marty Meehan, D-Mass, the legislation would outlaw “soft money” contributions to national political parties, but permit such contributions — up to $10,000 per donor per year — to any state or local party. It would also ban certain types of political advertising 60 days prior to an election. The House passed the bill early Thursday morning. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle said as soon as the bill reaches the Senate, which could be after a one-week recess next week, he would seek to bring up the measure and pass it. POLITICAL CHESS GAME Sen. Fritz Hollings, D-S.C., who voted against a similar Senate bill last year, said he would vote to stop any filibuster of the bill. But Hollings’s move was offset when Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, who voted for the Senate bill last year, announced he was withdrawing his support — meaning it was not clear whether supporters had 60 votes to overcome a filibuster. The Senate’s principal opponent of the measure, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said he wanted to study the House-passed bill before deciding on his strategy. President Bush has not said if he will sign or veto the measure.
