I think Debka has it right. Al Qaida is completely on the run and their only chance of remaining viable is to get involved in the one place the Muslim world's most sympathetic about.

It'll be a hot time in the Old Town for awhile, and frankly, it doesn't matter if Sharon, Netanyahu, Peres or Mickey Mouse is in charge.

Ultimately, when Bush convinces the Saudis and Egyptians that it's time to settle the thing, and the PLO gets labelled as the fourth member of the axis, the stalemate will end. But not until. Arafat and Al Qaida and the other terrorist groups have it all on the line there and can't back down. They will, unfortunately, have to get threatened down, or beaten down.

Which I find unutterably sad.
