The other thing it highlights, is the necessity of a backup plan. You always need to ask, "What will I do if things don't turn out the way I (currently) think they will?" They simply couldn't imagine demand falling abruptly, so they made no plans for it, and ignored the early warning signs. I remember, for about a year there, mid-2000 to mid-2001, everyone was chanting in unison, "We are Cisco. We are immune. Nothing macro can touch us."
