agreed. it's conceivable that since it's about a relatively technical economic issue it was edited by different staffers at the magazine from the security-oriented pieces.

as for the establishment point, meanwhile, my position is the following. It seems to me that more often than not, these days FA is trying to present the best argumentation it can find about foreign-policy-related issues. Sometimes that argumentation will support existing policy, and sometimes it won't--just as sometimes the authors will be part of the establishment, and sometimes not. The point is that the perspective of the mag may not be as reflexively and predictably and unquestioningly an outlet for some "establishment" as it may have been at times in the past. That's all I'd claim--that, and that given the vast amounts of crap out there, it's good enough to be worth perusing.

as for the "reading beneath the news" line, that's about as high a compliment as you could pay, because I think that's precisely the goal the editors are trying to achieve.
