Hi Neo,

That's a very interesting account of the development of your political leanings. I appreciate being able to read about it.

I certainly respect your support of Reagan. Actually, what I find most interesting about what you've written are your points about pacifism and the following quote: " I simply got more practical, and developed a better sense of how society works."

I am not a pacifist. Never was. But I disagree that pacifists believe what they do out of cowardice or a desire to maintain the moral upper hand. I think these are very trying times for American pacifists and that their ranks have thinned significantly in the face of the terrible attacks on our country.

About your quote: it reminds me of something that I've heard conservatives say over and over again, that they essentially "grew out of" their liberal views when they learned how the world really works. The implication is that liberalism is for children and conservatism is for adults. I think this is just as incorrect as the liberal canard that liberalism is for the thoughtful and conservatism is for reactive dummies. The fact is that there is worth inherent in many conservative views, just as there is in many liberal views, and that smart and thoughtful people fall into each camp in relatively equal numbers. Were this not so, there'd be no political discussions here on SI or in livingrooms all over the country.
