Actually, I never asserted that pacifists were cowards. I do, however, think that the acceptance of the triumph (however temporary) of evil, in order to avoid violence is an instance of insisting that the cleanliness of one's "hands" is more important than the result. Certainly, it seemed so to me at the time.

As for the quote, it applied to moving from a more radical to a liberal point- of- view. The case is somewhat more complicated when you are comparing center- left with center- right, since it mainly has to do with line drawing. There should be a substantial underlying consensus, despite some hot button disagreements.
