The German subs sank a lot of Liberty ships headed for Murmansk. The United States did provide help to the Russians, but the Russians did a lot more for themselves. By the time the Allies invaded France the Russians were already well on their way back toward Berlin. Some of post-war Russian paranoia had to do with the delay in opening "the second front."

Russia lost something on the order of 30,000,000 people--military and civilians--in the war. The United States lost something on the order of 400,000--but many of these were natural deaths among the 16,000,000 or so who served in the armed forces during the period. American civilian deaths from military action were very small.

To say this does not diminish the heroism and sacrifice of a great many Americans. But it may explain why the Russians were so hard to deal with for so many years.
