I like the story about when John Wayne undertook to entertain some marines who were recovering from wounds suffered in one of the assaults in the Pacific.

He said two or three dopey superpatriotic things and they booed him off the stage.

I think it was William Manchester, the great war historian, himself very badly wounded, who saw this and wrote about it.
