Eric,

Yes, a short of NSCP was twice as profitable as a short of MSFT. But NSCP's stock is so volatile, you only have to be right about 50% of the time. With MSFT, the stock almost never presents such opportunities. This short was as much a trophy as it was a money maker. ;)

Regarding the future of the Office monolith, it's not what shipping now that matters to a stock price, it's the competitive forces those products will face in the future that matters. IBM has tried "it's shipping now" with OS/2 for years without success. What prevents this reasoning from working is that what's shipping today might not be what's best for long term productivity. Windows users realized that and stayed away from OS/2 by the millions.

If Office 4.0 users can be convinced by Netscape (and others) that long term productivity may be better served by waiting rather than upgrading to 32-bit versions of Office, a good many of'em might just do it.
