<<<The Russians won WWII???>>>
Yes, I do think so.
memphisguy, it is very hard to find The Truth. Unfortunately history was/is written by politicians. The way I was taught in Russian school (in 197x) was that the allies started the invasion in 07/1944 because they were afraid that Russia would take over the whole Europe. Allies wanted to have both Germany and Russia well exhausted before they got involved. My son in US school was taught very little about WWII. Basically good Americans, British and Russians defeated bad Germans. He wasn't told that Russia alone lost over 20,000,000 people in WWII.
Having Wehrmacht troops drawn from the Eastern Front in anticipation of the Allied Invasion was important, but we don't know how critical it was. US sent some food supplies, trucks and planes to Russia. How critical was that?
My dad fought WWII from 1942 till 1945. He went from Kharkov to Berlin. I lost relatives in WWII.
With all my respect to your grandfather, the Russians won WWII with help from other nations.
