The term of art is "the tragedy of the commons". It isn't just a medieval flaw. Look at what the greed of man did to destroy the Grand Banks Cod fishery. Seemingly permanently, and perhaps irrevocably destroyed by greed. For four centuries, the Grand Banks were one of the most important sources of protein for the Northern European and Northern American diets. And we destroyed it. Welcome to the wonderful world of "Free Markets".
