There are times when dissent should be discouraged, although the circumstances where overt censorship should be contemplated are very narrow, for example, in about those circumstances where civil disorder calls for martial law. Most discouragement is informal and a matter of social disapproval. Such is JLAs thread, since his power to censor is confined to his own thread, and there are plenty of other places to post one's views. He is establishing an editorial viewpoint, much as Then New Republic or National Review do. That is permissible pretty much anytime.

X has been taken to task more than deserved through misunderstanding. However, she has called down legitimate criticism through some of her statements.

The Kinsley article ultimately calls for lightening up. It supports you to the extent that it acknowledges that most decent people, in the aftermath of the attacks, were careful about what they said. But after that, it calls for being more willing to make mistakes, to speak freely......
