I think a half decent cpu with abundant cache will beat a better cpu with a lot less cache on everyday tasks.

Not in the absence of any other factors. Who would take the 20% performance benefit of a huge cache in preference to the 50% performance benefit of a faster CPU?

Of course, if the large cache processor is marked "Intel" and costs a lot more then a lot of people will obviously buy it :)
