RtS, I was unaware of SMH until you brought it up in this post. Upon comparison of the stocks in each group, there is much similarity. After the changes to the SOX at the end of this week, the similarity will be even closer. I checked on how closely the 2 symbols tracked each other for the past year and it seems to very close as can be seen at: bigcharts.marketwatch.com So after the changes are made to the SOX this weekend, the following should be the difference between stocks included in the 2 symbols. SMH will include all symbols in the SOX with the exception of MOT and LSCC. In other words, SMH will include 15 out of the 17 stocks in the SOX index. The SOX will include all symbols in SMH with the exception of ADI, VTSS, ATML, AMKR and SNDK. In other words, the SOX will include 15 out of the 20 stocks included in the SMH symbol. The tracking between the 2 symbols, which has been very close in the past, should now track even closer.
