Windows NT is catching on. Don't misunderstand, I love UNIX, I make a good living working on Sparc's and Solaris. But I don't believe for a minute that Java is selling SUNW gear. People are buying Sparc's as they always have been for near real time, robust business and engineering applications. As for servers, if you need to build a high hit rate web site, SUNW offers some of the best and most economical solutions right this minute. I know of no one who's waiting for OS/2 version 25 or Plan 9 from Apple or NT from MSFT.

However, when NT ships any idiot will be able to build a web site right out of the box. Under UNIX, you need to be pretty familiar with (what others call) cryptic UNIX commands, Daemons and DNS/NIS+. There just isn't enough qualified UNIX and Network administrators to handle all the work to build all these web sites. So companies will gravitate to something powerful (NT and quad Intel P6-200's) and easy to use. If you can afford some UNIX admins, you'll choose UNIX, but the learning curve for a secure UNIX web site is so much higher than NT. Sun needs to work on this, the CDE is a nice step in that direction, I hope they continue in that direction.
