In the case of "it being lost" or "its being lost": You've sort of convinced me that the possessive would have better reflected my meaning.

But what about this?

There has been intellectual stimulation. And, to me most surprisingly, there has been a quantity of fine prose, one might go so far as to say literature, produced on SI. The idea of it being lost is, to me, the most distressing."

The 'it' feels to the speaker kind of like Rosamund feels to Maraduke, there.

Still, I do think 'its' would have been better in my first post. Even though....

P.S. I know the above paragraph is a silly one, btw....
