Rosamunde is a witch
or
Marmaduke is her father.

1) Marmaduke watched her as she opened the envelope that had just been delivered by the taciturn postman. Rosmaunde had a series of catastrophic love affairs, not uncommon to the hot blooded women in her family. The window seat faced south onto the bright blue Mediterranean, warmed by the morning sun. Marmaduke knew that her current lover was a good man who truly loved her. Her lover had to leave town, there was a problem with the olives, but he promised to write every day and he had. The image of Rosamund sitting in the windowseat reading and rereading his love letters filled Marmaduke's heart with tenderness.

2) Rosamunde cackled with insane glee as her golem slowly became animate. The powerful philter of love that she had served to Marmaduke, a simpering suitor, was strong enough that he wouldn't see the clumsy nature of the golem, fashioned from jute and twine. Marmaduke wrote all his love letters on purple paper and she made sure the golem had mimicked the trick of seeming to read them. The primitive nature of the golem made the action seem repetitious but Marmaduke was so stunned by the love philtre that she was sure he wouldn't notice. Rosamunde decide to put her golem out in windowseat and make it read, she was sure Marmaduke wouldn't notice. The image of Rosamund's sitting in the windowseat reading and rereading his love letters filled Marmaduke's heart with tenderness."

I hope that helps.
I think the postman might have been Freddy.
