Another fascinating piece of historical investigation indeed... To be sure, technological progress is likely to bring about ever more "historical breakthroughs" in archeology, paleontology, etc. For instance, world-famous French paleontologist Yves Coppens (*) says that, in the future, it'll be possible to HEAR what our prehistoric ancestors were humming while they carved their cave paintings! How? By using laser technology: the acoustic vibrations of the caveman's humming were transmitted through his/her arm up to his hand and chisel, and, somehow, engraved in his/her frescos... So that, hundreds of thousands of years later, engineers can extract the soundtrack using a laser pencil.
