Maybe the repetition of the pattern that Jacob has outlined occurs not because of anything inherent in business or technology but because of human nature. There is some interesting work being done concerning how humans tend to follow the crowd. This may have been alluded to by some of the comments made in regard to this topic. As a consensus builds, its' ability to sway more and more people grows expotentially. I think this probably applies perfectly to the cycle.
