It's not immigration in Japan. The Japanese had the US export game mostly to themselves till the late 80s. Their financial bubble, the rising yen, and the associated costs of doing business forced them to start moving their production to neighboring countries. In doing so, they also improved the quality of the goods produced in those countries. I would expect as more production moves to China, Japan's export industry will continue to suffer more.
