Some wars are fought for political reasons. Some for humanitarian reasons. I would say a combination of both is what typifies most wars.

If the war resulted in the absolute destruction of the civilization it would not be just. Thus was not the case in Afghanistan. Our war effort has saved thousands upon thousands of people from tyranny, starvation and bondage.

An evil ruthless regime had many elements within it attack a free democratic civilization. It then attempted to protect that evil entity from being captured and brought to justice. The process of removing that threat, has led to the potential freedom of millions of people otherwise caught in the grips of fanaticism.

The war is and was just, and has led to many lives being saved.

Your "period" is too black and white a view for me to agree with.
