Jon, Tim, etc.: RE Cable Modem Bandwidth

"Unlike ISDN which dedicates a bandwidth to each user, the cable network supports a shared
bandwidth approach similar to that used in computer local area networks (LANs) [4]. This offers
superior economic characteristics to the ISDN alternate, however, the standard cable network
does not provide the same guarantees of capacity. The claim that cable modems are X times faster
than telephone modems are exaggerated since the bandwidth is actually shared by other homes
linked to the neighborhood node [5]. It is a question of how many homes have PC's, how many
subscribe, and how many are logged in at the same time. If 50 people on a node were on-line,
then the resulting data rates would be 200kbps on a 10Mbps system and 600kbps on a 30Mbps
system."
