I agree with that. I was just questioning your assumption that Intel got exclusive rights to IP. There has been no indications that occurred, and the FTC would likely raise objections if it did.

I would. Intel needs it right now to help mitigate the lower IPC due to the long pipeline. It's a great way to use otherwise idle resources. AMD's biggest problem is keeping the clockrate up, SMT doesn't help with that. They can do that by working on the process side and by adding pipeline stages, along with the re-balancing that will occur. They will also do some things that will help on the IPC end of things with the Hammers, such as reducing the memory latency and likely improved branch prediction and better bandwidth to the L2 cache in particular. With that in place, the follow on (the Dog series) would mean a longer pipeline, some more execution units and the changes for SMT...

Dunno if that is what is planned, but it seems a reasonable guess.
