Efforts to end genocide are not imperialistic, per se. We were not just talking about that. And, in any case, we are still in Bosnia. Now, imagine trying to hold down a continent......
These are not the same arguments. The case with Japan was different. It was towards the conclusion of a terrible war, which the atomic bomb had the best chance of suddenly ending without even more butchery. In the other case, we would have been starting another war based upon sheer speculation about trade- offs......
As for a well- placed device aiding the cause of freedom in China, that is very debatable, unless we were prepared to occupy China as we had Japan, with the likely hood of an ongoing guerrilla war.......
Of course, it is not a surprise that the Soviets did not live up to agreements made at Yalta. It hardly matters, though, as long as we were not in a position to enforce the agreements...... |
