Do you know what an axis is?

Yes I do. An axis in the line which marks the intersection of two planes. There is a radial symmetry of the axis when it is viewed along the line (as if the line were a point).

In the 1930s Mussolini used the image of an axis to describe the relationship between Germany and Italy. He indicated that the alliance between the two countries was so strong that all other issues might revolve around the alliance without changing it, just as two planes may revolve around their axis of intersection. Mussolini's image and term was quickly used by the press to denote this alliance and Japan was later added to the "axis" powers even though an intersection of three planes did not have the same geometric image. By that time axis meant a strong alliance between nations.

Bush's use of axis to describe the relationship between Iraq, Iran, and North Korea highlights his shallow knowledge of history.
