I actually would prefer a huge engineering salary adjustment for these big companies also. The problem is, its a corporate restructuring issue and you know how long those take. Mid-level and "star" engineers are basically undercompensated at most big high tech companies (in terms of salary) and that is one reason why these options exist.

The other issue is tax implications of consultants vs. salary paid. Maybe someone here can comment on this... apparently consultant money has better tax treatment than salary too. Its just too easy to get a high paying consulting position vs. the same salary$$... the system is working against high salaries, imo.
