It is certainly true that those who are not affluent can be concerned with non- relatives, and even those outside the tribe. My main point was that if one is preoccupied with family problems, or problems closer to home, it is hard to have the time, money, or energy to invest in compassion for complete strangers. Having institutional support, or fewer trials (fewer deaths and serious diseases) help to encourage wider concerns.......
