Sam, that math is both correct and incorrect.
The basic math is correct.
What is incorrect is the statement that "if 50 people on a node were ONLINE, then the resulting data rates would be..."
That should read, "if 50 people on a node were DOWNLOADING INFORMATION AT 100% DUTY CYCLE..."
And even that assumes that the system(s) at the other end can keep-up. In many cases, that will not be true.
In most cases, people will be browsing the web, etc. and will have a very high idle percentage. 50 people actively using their computers are likely to get a MUCH higher bandwidth, measured over the time they are actually active, than the figures above - perhaps as much as 10X faster.
The telcos are desparate on ISDN - it is a dead duck. In many areas, the idiots allienated customers by raising rates that were already high. Now they think we are stupid enough to beleive that something that costs several times as much, is more troublesome, less reliable (my experience), and much, much slower is, in theory, better. |
