F5 Upgrades Traffic Management Software
By InternetWeek.com
Internet content and traffic management vendor F5 Networks Inc. Tuesday detailed a new software release for its Big-IP system. The new software adds granular security control functions.

Among the additions to Big-IP Version 4.2 is support for client-side Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates. Big-IP can examine a client SSL certificate to authenticate a user and then insert key certificate information, or an entire certificate, into a packet and pass it on to the server application for authentication and validation. SSL client support provides granular control over end-user activities.

Big-IP 4.2 can now insert client IP addresses in HTTP headers so applications and Web services can track and log customer interactions at a given site. The feature can also be used to allocate appropriate resources to a given service or app.

The new software directs users to the most appropriate resource to service their request by analyzing requests for quality- and type-of-service information.

Big-IP 4.2 is available now; pricing for the switches starts at $21,250.

F5 on Tuesday also announced an upgraded version of 3-DNS, its traffic management product that features load balancing across WANs and multiple data centers.

Upgrades include a map that shows the best location to deploy new resources and evaluates performance of Internet connections. They also include application and Web services persistence across a WAN, ensuring application continuity. Finally, the new product checks sites on a global basis to ensure content is available before users are routed to a particular site.

3-DNS version 4.2 is available now. Prices for 3-DNS units start at $28,990.
