You know, that whole swaddling cloth and stable story kinda took on a life of its own around 250 AD when some very tall tales started circulating about an obsure fellow at the east end of the Mediterranean. A mythology, I believe is what the snooty intellectuals call it.

Modern equivalents would be the Art Bell type phenomena, the belief that stocks are actually worth something and the notion that America is the great savior of the world. All completely untrue, but widely believed.

Here's something you might like:

Last day on which a total tally of those detained in U.S. terrorism investigations was released to the public : 11/2

Number of biological materials with military potential sent to Iraq by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control in the 1980s : 14

Minimum number of the ten biological materials suspected in Iraqi warfare research that were supplied by U.S. firms : 9

Number of Pop-Tarts dropped on Afghanistan as part of U.S. airborne food aid in the first month of bombing : 2,400,000

Tom, I think this gives whole new twist to the old "guns and butter" cliche.... <g>
