Qualcomm joins interoperability testing initiative

3G Fast Track Objective

Wednesday 20th February

A group of leading wireless equipment vendors* today announced an initiative to coordinate the interoperability testing of the UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) radio interface between infrastructure and terminal solutions vendors. The radio interface connects a 3G terminal to an operators’ 3G/UMTS network.

*Companies involved:
Alcatel, LG Electronics, NEC, Philips, Qualcomm, Sagem, Samsung, Siemens,Trium

Competitive business culture, interoperability and open multi-vendor networks are recognized as major success factors in GSM, GPRS and UMTS.

Wireless equipment vendors are committed to extending common working practices into the UMTS radio interface. Short time-to-market and evolving standards require co-operation amongst network infrastructure
and terminal vendors.

The supporting vendors will define common interoperability test cases, and testing methodologies, to achieve that they conduct regular meetings and set-up common procedures. These procedures will help ensure that UMTS
systems deployed in the field will be compatible, enabling mobile users to access UMTS services.

The vendor initiative has already drafted the first release of the Master Test Catalogue (MTC) for the radio interface, which is based on the 3GPP June '01 standard. This cooperation between vendor’s of UMTS infrastructure and terminal solutions will enable interoperability and
speed-up 3G commercial rollout.
