Feb 19, 2002 (Communications Today/PBI Media via COMTEX) -- As the federal government attempts to put it out of business, NextWave Telecom, which is reorganizing under Chapter 11 protection, has built CDMA2000 1X systems in 60 of its 95 markets and is conducting trials of its wireless data service in several of the areas. The Hawthorne, N.Y.-based company, which is offering service to beta customers using handheld computers, said it expects to complete infrastructure construction in its remaining 35 markets in the first half this year.
After an appeals court ruled in June 2001 that the Federal Communications Commission violated bankruptcy law by repossessing NextWave's spectrum licenses, the company hired Lucent Technologies [LU] to build its network. However, the federal government is asking the Supreme Court to consider its appeal of the lower courts' ruling in favor of NextWave. The high court is expected next month to decide whether it will hear the case.
