Oh man, I didn't realize you were going to include socialized medicine in that equation.-g-

In terms of living a long life, choose your parents well and stay as far away from drug pushing cut 'em up doctors as is reasonably possible. 80% of the people under medical care are there from complications of treatment. Needless to say, if you have something critical that is actually treatable you need them.

The important thing is discerning the different between those conditions which can be prevented or managed with lifestyle changes and those that need medical intervention. The developed world is dying from too much rich food and not enough exercise, if they are kept alive through the magic of modern medicine it is a bitter sweet victory. I think its an ancient Chinese curse to live a long life in poor health.
