eCo: Point taken, but Hammer's SpecInt will be comparable to McKinley (at the very least). On top of that respectable baseline performance, how many Hammer's can you fit into that same budget?

In order to equal multi-way McKinley performance, you'd have to go with a Hammer cluster. The problem with that is that clusters are just simply not as stable. This likely won't be a problem for most university settings, but for mission critical apps, it might well be worth it to go with something different.

In the end, remember the Enterprise Customer survey that Milo posted recently (original from fool.com):

1. Reliability
2. Quality of Service and Support
3. Performance
4. Total Cost of Ownership
5. Compatibility with existing systems
6. Scalability
7. Reputation of Vendor
8. Ease of Administration
9. Initial Purchase Price
10. Interoperability in Multiplatform Environments
