If you believe in freedom of religion, and in the right of groups to perpetuate themselves culturally in our society, then your take on the issue is dreadfully inadequate.

We restrict freedom of religion in other instances when we have a compelling reason. But I don't think that rstricting freedom of religion is the point. Lots of people have lots of weird religious beliefs and we don't cater to all of them. Do you want to accommodate those Zeusians as well. Of those who think we're descended from astronauts. Creationism is demonstrably poor science. Not only should we not teach it, we shouldn't accommodate it either. You say that the rights of groups to perpetuate themselves culturally outweighs teaching our kids the latest and best. You could say that reasonable people might disagree on that, but it's too much to call those who oppose creationism frivolous.

There is no First Amendment issue if there is the inclusion of an array of wise sayings and admonitions from various traditions. What is wrong with working such a compromise, if only to allay parental anxiety.

Well, you seem to acknowlege that there's no basis for correlating the Commandments with behavior in the classroom. Yes, the only reason would be to allay parental anxiety. I have said before that I can live with a collage of Commandment-like documents if it shuts people up, but I find it ignorant and utterly frivolous. And I wonder why we don't care about allaying the anxiety of lesbian parents... Or atheist parents...
