Dan,>>chip production orders are up 50%<< The SEMI report is just for semi-equipment. The 50% increase was for final manufacturing equipment. SEMI has nothing to do with the chips themselves nor chip production orders if I think you are saying what you are indeed saying. Here is the link for SEMI and their report. I think the main concern is that new orders are fairly flat and a strong recovery trend is not apparent. semi.org!OpenDocument

Here is what Briefing.com said:
8:15AM Semi equip book/bill ratio ticks up, but orders weak : Brokerage firm comments on the semi equipment book/bill ratio released last night are mixed but generally cautious; the ratio rose to 0.81 from 0.77 but this was due primarily to lower billings -- orders rose only slightly. CSFB says the report is more negative than positive and notes that the magnitude of recovery should matter more than direction now, but SG Cowen says that the significant increase in back-end orders is a potential leading indicator for the industry.<<<
