Man, I hear you. Never was able to memorize how to
exit saving file <ggg>

However, to escape the bronze age of Notepad, you
may want to take a look at

ultraedit.com

Not bad, the "coulmn" mode is especially handy.
But I still am not sure if it can find and
replace non-printable characters...
