London Stocks End Dn; Hurt By Downbeat Corp News

LONDON, Feb 20, 2002 (ODJ Select via COMTEX) -- (Dow Jones)--London stocks ended lower Wednesday, dragged down by a rash of mainly downbeat domestic corporate news.
The FTSE 100 ended down 68.4 points, or 1.3%, at 5024.1 on provisional market volume of 2.2 billion shares.

A positive start to U.S. trading helped limit losses in afternoon trade, but that boost was insufficient to offset worries over the mixed bag of corporate earnings.

"In the current trading environment, investors want to see the color of a company's money," said Jonathan Stubbs strategist at Schroders Salomon Smith Barney.

"They are playing things close to the chest and are unwilling to buy into weakness or adopt aggressive positions in the face of ongoing concerns about the timing of a pick up in the economy."

The biggest blue-chip decliner on Wednesday was computer services and software firm Logica which fell 83.5 pence, or 16.9%, to 409 pence, after it cut the growth forecast for its key text messaging unit.

Logica reported first-half figures
