LONDON, Feb 21 (Reuters) - European stocks were expected to open sharply higher on Thursday after New York chalked up its biggest one-day gain in 11 weeks overnight.

The Dow Jones industrial average surged 2.01 percent as investors swarmed back into the market in search of bargains. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 Index rose 1.35 percent and the tech-laden Nasdaq Composite added 1.43 percent.

Equity markets also rose in Asia. Tokyo's Nikkei average jumped 4.69 percent -- its biggest percentage gain in 11 months.
