I disagree with Adi
Traditional societies are very competitive
they often make the "chief" or leader the man who is the best hunter
the woman who can give birth to and raise the most children is most esteemed
Competitiveness was probably highly adaptive in narrowly focusing social attention on certain highly desirable traits
we see that in animals as well
competition is the bedrock of mating- the goal of all living creatures that reproduce by sexual reproduction. Those organisms that are successful have progeny, those that are not successful find their genes relegated to the genetic garbage dump.

I merely find more sweetness and light in structuring human interaction to minimize interpersonal competition- but I have no illusions about ever eliminating it, nor would eliminating it completely be a good thing
