You might recall the famous dinner which Jefferson hosted for Madison and Hamilton in an attempt to broker a deal on the Assumption issue--whether it was appropriate for the Federal gov't to assume the debts of various States. The Capital was ultimately moved from NYC to a Southern venue ("South of the Pawtommack") in return for an agreement to assume the debts.

Some States were heavier debtors than others, creating significant friction between them, a lot of which was regional.

The start of a lot of problems. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if Jefferson had not been the host at the famous dinner and/or the deal had not been made.
