I am not trying to obscure what his goals are, I am trying to point them out. He is not seeking to contain terrorism, he is trying to punish official enemies of America, defined by a Byzantine network of interests. So, Iran is an enemy because they are supporting Hezbollah, a group which did social work to help the Palestinians in Lebanon as well as to fight off the Israeli invasion of that country. Israel's goal was to scare the Lebanese population into kicking out the Palestinians (the definition of terrorism), those Palestinians themselves being people who were trying to reclaim their land from the illegal Israeli occupation. We sanctioned, armed, and funded this invasion of Lebanon (which was in complete violation of international law), going so far as to provide cluster bombs for Israel to drop in civilian areas. There is no defense for our and Israel's actions, and there is considerable room for defense of Hezbollah's and Iran's. But, all this is cast aside when a president tries to establish a legacy with a hopefully famous speech.
